HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) is designed for anti-ageing, face lifting, body contouring and sculpting without the surgery bleeding or scarring. It involves using a handpiece, which is passed across the skin over and over again. The machine emits very precise ultrasound waves, which penetrate the skin at different depths depending on the area. If you could look inside the skin, you would see rows and rows of dots or hot spots where the ultrasound hits. HIFU applies energy to locally heat a precise area of tissue.

 

The ultrasound beams are focused on a fractional point, due to the significant energy, the temperatures within the area of tissue instantly rise to 70 degrees without damaging epidermal tissue. This causes protein denaturation and cell ablation (destruction). It targets the connective tissue stimulating collagen synthesis (via the wound healing response), improving skin texture, and fat reduction, reducing wrinkles and firming of skin.

 

It also targets the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system), which is the layer that a surgeon gets hold of during a surgical procedure. There is both wound contracting in the muscle and new collagen synthesis which in the next 4-6 weeks uplifts and firms the skin. The process of new collagen regeneration continues as the extracellular matrix is gradually but continually reformed and remodelled which improves more over 6 months after treatment.
